Cultural heritage
The Manche has a rich cultural heritage and lives to the rhythm of various music festivals such as "Jazz sous les pommiers" in Coutances and "Chauffer dans la noirceur" in Montmartin sur mer.
Mont-Saint-Michel is built on a rocky islet in a very beautiful bay, the scene of the largest tides in continental Europe. The mountain and its bay have been declared a UNESCO heritage site. Situated between Normandy and Brittany, this magnificent site is one of the most visited in France.
Here is a small selection of towns worth visiting in the surrounding area:
- Coutances, the former historic capital (with its cathedral, a masterpiece of Norman Gothic architecture, the municipal park and the Jazz Sous les pommiers festival in May)
- Granville, also known as the Monaco of the North (with its pedestrianised streets, old town, fishing port, Plat-Gousset beach, Dior museum, covered weekly market...)
- Barfleur, one of the most beautiful towns in France (with an active fishing harbour and an anchorage harbour with dry moorings for small and large fishing boats and yachts)
- Bayeux, spared from the bombings of 1944 (with its historic tapestry, small streets, canals and bourgeoisie buildings, special architectural heritage)
- Cherbourg, the largest town in the Manche (very lively with its pedestrianised streets and fishing, commercial and passenger ports, as well as a marina).....
